13th CUT Games begin today

The Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Games will commence here in St. Kitts today, Friday July 23rd, with an opening ceremony starting at 6pm at the state of the art Silver Jubilee Stadium in Bird Rock.

PRO of the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (SKNAAA), Evris Huggins said that the CUT Games are renowned Caribbean wide, occurring every two years.

He said that competing in this year’s event are top athletes from Anguilla, Antigua, Bahamas, Bermuda, BVI, Cayman Islands, Suriname, Haiti, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, Nevis, Martinique, St. Croix, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Thomas, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and St. Maarten.

He said that some of St. Kitts’ top athletes such as Tiandra Ponteen Virgil Hodge have benefitted from the CUT Games along with regional athletes who are now Olympic medalists.

Competing will be athletes in the Under 9, Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 categories.

A total of 40 athletes will be participating for St. Kitts and 39 will be representing Nevis.

Huggins mentioned that the games originated in Barbados with the Caribbean Union of Teachers there, it started expanding and included other countries.

Barbados has been champions in the games over five out of the thirteen games. Following closely behind to date is Trinidad with the second tallied wins, while Jamaica has the third most wins.

The defending Champions are Jamaica who won the games in Tortola, BVI two years ago.

There will be a lot of good spirited competition. The weekend long event will end on Sunday July 25th.

Tickets can be purchased at the Silver Jubilee Stadium. The opening ceremony is free to attend as well as all morning sessions starting at 9a.m.

There will be an entry fee for afternoon sessions starting at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for the Kim Collins Pavilion will cost $25, Metal Stand will be $15 and the grounds will be $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12 years of age.
